മലയാളത്തിലെ ക്ലാസിക്കുകൾ - 2 - കാപാലിക

1973 ൽ ക്രോസ്ബെല്റ്റ് മണി നിർമ്മാണവും സംവിധാനവും ചെയ്തു ഷീല മുഖ്യ വേഷത്തിൽ അഭിനയിച്ച ക്ലാസിക് ചിത്രമാണ് "കാപാലിക". എൻ . എൻ . പിള്ളയുടെ ഇതേ പേരിലുള്ള  സൂപ്പര് ഹിറ്റ് നാടകത്തിന്റെ ദൃശ്യാവിഷ്കാരമായിരുന്നു കാപാലിക എന്ന സിനിമ. വളരെയധികം കാലിക പ്രസക്തിയുള്ളതും സമൂഹത്തിലെ പല മേഖലയിൽ പെട്ട മനുഷ്യരുടെ കഥകളും പച്ചയായി തന്നെ തുറന്നു കാണിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു ഈ ചിത്രത്തിൽ. ഒരേ ദിവസം പല ആളുകള്ക്ക് സംഭിവിക്കുന്ന കഥകളാണ് ഇന്നത്തെ ന്യൂ ജനറേഷൻ സിനിമകളുടെ ആഖ്യാന രീതി എന്ന നിലയ്ക്ക് 1973 ൽ റിലീസ് ആയ മലയാളത്തിലെ ആദ്യ ന്യൂ ജനറേഷൻ ചിത്രമാണ് കാപാലിക എന്ന് നിസ്സംശയം പറയാം. കാരണം, ബോംബേ നഗരത്തിലെ അതി പ്രശസ്തയും സമ്പന്നയുമായ ഒരു വേശ്യയുടെ ബംഗ്ലാവിൽ ഒരു രാത്രി വന്നു പോകുന്ന പല തരത്തിൽ ഉള്ള ആളുകളുടെ കഥയാണ്‌  ഈ ചിത്രം

Mankatha Review

Mankatha is a much awaited film by tamil industry for two major reasons. One being it is Thala Ajit Kumar's 50th movie and another is that it is Venkat Prabhu's yet another action thriller after the hilarious flick"Goa". To mention in a single statement, it is Ajit Kumar's "A Great Come back". Ajit's career graph had been in an all time low when his last movie "Asal" bombed at box office like a water soaked grenade. Last time, when he had been rejected by the mass, he made a bomblastic come back with the movie "Billa" and this time it is "Mankatha". To provide him a hand support, there is Action King Arjun who gives Ajit a run for his money in this movie. As usual, Venkat Prabhu has tweaked in, all his same old cast and crew where ever possible such as Vaibhav, Arvind, and Premji. But Sampath who had played vital roles in his previous movies were missing this time. Now a bit about the story line, but i promise you ; there are no spoilers ahead.

ചിരിയുടെ മാല പടക്കവുമായി ത്രീ കിങ്ങ്സ് വരുന്നു എന്നൊക്കെ പരസ്യം കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ സ്വപ്നത്തില്‍ പോലും വിചാരിച്ചില്ല അത് ഇത്ര വല്യ ഒരു വെറുപ്പീര് പടമാണെന്ന് . മുജ്ജന്മ സുകൃതം കൊണ്ടാണ് ഞാന്‍ കൂടുകാരെ ഒന്നും നിര്‍ബന്ധിച്ചു ഈ പടം കാണാന്‍ കൂടെ കൊണ്ട് പോകാതിരുന്നത്. ഇല്ലെങ്കില്‍ ഈ റിവ്യൂ എഴുതാന്‍ ബാക്കി വെക്കാതെ എന്നെ അവര്‍ തീയേറ്ററില്‍ തന്നെ തല്ലി കൊന്നു കുഴിച്ചു മൂടിയേനെ. ഗുലുമാല്‍ എന്ന ഹിറ്റ് കോമഡി ചിത്രത്തിന് ശേഷം വി.കെ പ്രകാശും, ജയസൂര്യയും കുഞ്ചാക്കോ ബോബനും വീണ്ടും വരുന്നു എന്നറിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍, സത്യം പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ ഞാന്‍ ഒരു നല്ല കോമഡി ചിത്രം പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചു. അതെന്റെ തെറ്റ്. നൂറ്റിയമ്പത് രൂപ കൊടുത്തു ബാന്ഗ്ലൂരിലെ മല്ടിപ്ലക്സില്‍ കേറി കണ്ടു കാശ് കളഞ്ഞു. അതെന്റെ അഹങ്കാരം. ഇങ്ങനെയും തട്ടി കൂട്ടി ഒരു പടം എടുക്കാം എന്നറിയുന്നത് ഇതാദ്യമായാണ്.. പണ്ട് പ്രിത്വിരാജിനെയും ഇന്ദ്രജിത്തിനെയും തമ്മിലടിച്ചു മുന്നേറുന്ന പോലീസുകാരായി "പോലീസ്" എന്ന ഒരു ആക്ഷന്‍ ചിത്രം ചെയ്ത ആളാണ്‌ വി.കെ. പ്രകാശ്. പൊട്ടി പോയെങ്കിലും, സംഭവം കണ്ടിരിക്കാവുന്ന ഒരു സ്ട്ടയിലിഷ് പടമാണ്. അത് പോല തന്നെ പോസിറ്റീവ് എന്ന വ്യത്യസ്തമായ യുവ പ്രതിഭകളുടെ ചിത്രവും എടുത്തു ഡീസന്റ് ഡയരക്ടര്‍ എന്ന ഒരു ഇമേജ് ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ മനുഷ്യന്‍ ആണ്. പിന്നീട് ട്രാക്ക് ഒന്ന് മാറ്റി. കോമഡി ആയി. അങ്ങനെ എടുത്ത ഗുലുമാലും വിജയിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ വി. കെ പ്രകാശിന്റെ ചിത്രം കണ്ടിരിക്കാം എന്നാ നിഗമനത്തില്‍ എത്തി ഞാന്‍. എന്നാല്‍ എന്നെ അങ്ങനെ അങ്ങ് നമ്ബെണ്ടെടാ ഉവ്വേ എന്ന് പുള്ളി തന്നെ പറഞ്ഞ പോലെ ആയി പോയി ഇത്. ഉണ്ടാകിയെടുത്ത പേര് സ്വയം കളഞ്ഞു കുളിച്ചിരിക്കുകയാണ് വി.കെ. പ്രകാശ്. പ്രകശേട്ടാ, നിങ്ങള്‍ തകര്‍ത്തത് വിശ്വാസമാണ്. നെഞ്ചോട്‌ ചേര്‍ത്ത് വെച്ച് ഞാന്‍ വളര്‍ത്തി വലുതാക്കിയ വിശ്വാസം...!

ഇനി ചിത്രത്തിലേക്ക്. ശങ്കരന്‍, ഭാസ്കരന്‍, റാം (ജയസൂര്യ, ഇന്ദ്രജിത്ത്, കുഞ്ചാക്കോ ബോബന്‍) എന്നിവര്‍ പണ്ട് പ്രതാപമായി വാണിരുന്ന എന്നാല്‍ കാര്‍ന്നോന്മാരുടെ സാമര്‍ത്ഥ്യം കൊണ്ട് ഇപ്പോള്‍ കുട്ടി ചോറായ ഒരു പഴയ കൊട്ടാരത്തിലെ ഇളം തലമുറക്കാരാണ്. കുട്ടിക്കാലം തൊട്ടെ മൂന്ന് പേരും അങ്ങോട്ടും ഇങ്ങോട്ടും അടിയാണ്. മുതിര്‍ന്നതോടെ അവര്‍ തമ്മിലുള്ള മത്സരവും, ശത്രുതയും വര്‍ദ്ധിച്ചു.മൂന്നു പേരും പരസ്പരം പാര വച്ച് നടക്കുന്നു. എങ്ങനെയും പണക്കാരാകുക എന്നതാണ് അവരുടെ ലക്‌ഷ്യം. മൂന്നു പേരെയും നന്നാക്കാന്‍ അളിയന്‍ ആയ അശോകന്‍ ഒരു കോള്‍ സെന്ററില്‍ ജോലിക്ക് കയറ്റുന്നു. അവിടെയും അവര്‍ അന്യോന്യം പാര വെക്കുന്നു. മൂന്നു പേര്‍ക്കും കിട്ടിയ വാഷിംഗ് മെഷീന്‍, ട്രെഡ്മില്‍, മിക്സി എന്നിവയുടെ സജഷന്‍ മാനുവല്‍ അങ്ങോട്ടും ഇങ്ങോട്ടും ഓരോരുത്തരും മാറ്റി വെക്കുന്നു. പിന്നെ മനസ്സിലായി കാണുമല്ലോ. ട്രെട്മിലിന്റെ കംബ്ലയിന്ടു പറയുന്ന കസ്ട്ടമരിനോട് മിക്സിയെ പറ്റിയും, മിക്സിയുടെ കസ്ട്ടമരിനോട് വാഷിംഗ് മെഷീനെ പറ്റിയും, വാഷിംഗ് മെഷീന്റെ ആളോട് ട്രെഡ് മില്ലിനെ പറ്റിയും പറഞ്ഞു കൊടുക്കുന്നു. അതും പോരാഞ്ഞു ഹാസ്യം എന്ന പേരില്‍ മിക്സിക്ക് അകത്തു അണ്ടര്‍ വെയര്‍ ഇടുന്നതും അത് പറന്നു നടക്കുന്നതും, വാഷിംഗ് മെഷീനിനകത്തു ഒരാളു കയറുന്നതും അയാള്‍ ചുരുങ്ങി ചെറുതായി പോകുന്നതും ഒക്കെ കാണിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇതൊക്കെ കണ്ടു കാണികള്‍ കയ്യടിക്കണോ അതോ ഡയരക്ടരുടെ കൈ തല്ലി ഒടിക്കണോ? നിങ്ങള്‍ തന്നെ പറ. അന്നേരം ഇതൊക്കെ എഴുതിയവനെ എന്റെ കയ്യില്‍ കിട്ടിയിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ ഇനി ഒരു കഥ എഴുതാന്‍ അവന്റെ ഒന്നും കൈ പൊങ്ങാത്ത വിധത്തില്‍ ആകിയേനെ. (സോറി ഞാന്‍ അല്പം ഇമോഷണലായി പോയി. നിക്ക് സങ്കടണ്ട്)

Payanam - Review

Payanam is a good movie which unfortunately did not get the attention which it deserved due to lack of publicity. This movie is a story about a flight hijack and before you say "Oh, i have seen a lot of Flight hijack flicks", let me say, this one is indeed a worth watching flick, which would make you feel good on a weekend.

Payanam is directed by Radha Mohan and Produced By Prakash Raj. When Prakash Raj produces a movie, audience can relax and go to the theater without the fear of losing money because we know that he would produce only movies which are good enough to have a strong story line and which would blend easily with a pinch of values and social commitment. His previous Ventures like Mozhi, Abhiyum Naanum etc might not be block busters , but the real lovers of Good cinema would appreciate those art works. Just because of that reason, expectation would be high for Payanam too and trust me, he did not let us down.

This movie does not has any cheesy introduction scene or colorful songs or unbelievable fight sequences. Movie starts at the Airport with Passengers waiting to board the flight from Chennai to Delhi. Passenger List include a minister, a super cine star, a doctor, a priest, a mimicry artist, a job seeker and people from various region and from different industries. Soon after the take off, flight is being kidnapped by 5 terrorists on board and the pilots call for an emergency landing at Tirupati. And it is then, when the world come to know about the hi-jack and the normal melodrama of the government begin.

Terrorists would want to release Yousuf Khan, who is the leader of their terrorist group and currently under police custody in Kashmir and also ask a ransom of 100 Crores. It is then a team of political beurocrats led by Prakash Raj, who is an IAS officer and political secretary takes in charge of negotiations with the terrorists. Meanwhile, NSG commandos led by Nagajuna is also summoned at the airport. But the Government higher officials play the usual red tape ism game and decides to release Yousuf Khan in return for the passengers. Nagarjuna who was the Same NSG commando who tracked down Yousuf Khan two years back at Ladakh could not agree to this "let-go" attitude of Indian Governals but had to swim with the flow. Story takes it twist and turn and the audience fasten their seat belts, when Yousuf Khan who is being transported from the jail for release gets killed in a natural calamity!

Manmadan Ambu - Review

I had been watching a lot of movies in the last two weeks and when i say that, i mean it. Out of the lot, only one movie which i felt like i should watch it again and again is , "Manmadan Ambu". When Kamal Haasan pair up with Veteran Director K.S Ravikumar, the hype is high, so is the hope. The last time both of them created magic together was with Dasavataram and i don't think i have to say what vibration it made to Indian Cinema. The best thing i like in Kamal is that, he does classic movies in serious subjects and much before we are out of that hangover, he delivers another 100% Entertainment movie. Manmadan ambu is such an entertainment which would tickle your bones for more than 2 hours.

Before i get into the review, one man whom i should appreciate is Madhavan. Madhavan and Kamal share an awesome rapport together and we have seen it already in Anpe Sivam. In this movie, Madhavan has done a great job. He has succeeded in playing his part of a doubtful lover, unlawful boss and a funny drunkard to the maximum extent. Kudos to Maddy for not making us Moody :-)



Story starts with a film shooting. Nisha aka Ambu (Trisha) is a top heroine who is on demand. Madanagopal (Madhavan) is a successful industrialist and Ambu's Fiance. From the first scene itself, director has portrayed that Madan's family is not much happy in their son marrying a film actress. On top of it, Madhavan is constantly suspicious on Ambu, who mingles freely with her co actor Surya. While returning from the shooting spot, both of them get into a verbal argument, rather a big fight and Ambu who was driving Madan's new Hummer clashes it with another car. Madan tries to sort out things with her after that narrow escape from car accident, but Ambu was in no mood to satisfy madan's suspicious mind. It is then she decides to go on a vacation in a cruise ship. What more is needed to pour fuel to Madan's already suspicious mind?

Ambu Starts her vacation on a cruise which visits several countries and it is then, Madan hires a detective and send in the same cruise to watch an eye on his love. That detective, is our hero Major Mannar (Kamal Haasan). Major Mannar is in urgent need of money to treat his friend who has been diagonissed for cancer. So he takes up this job. After observing Ambu for few days, Major is convinced that Madan is just imagining things and Ambu is truly innocent. So he gives a "Good Conduct Certificate" for Ambu to Madan. And, then when he asks for his payment to treat his friend, Madhan shows his real colors. "Detectives are paid when they find out something. You have not found anything and so there is no need to pay you." That's what Madan says to Major. Then, to teach him a lesson and to get the money of his labor, Major starts playing a double game. It is from this point, the movie gets interesting and the laughter wagon starts its journey.



Story and Dialogue of this movie is by Kamal Haasan itself and we can say, it is quite a refreshment. Kamal's wittier dialogues are surely liked by the audience. Malayalam Actors Kunjan and Manju Pillai plays the role of Mr & Mrs Kunju Kurup who are producers and running behind Ambu to get her dates for their new film. They have done their part really well. During the initial stage of shooting, Both of them had very less number of scenes, and by getting impressed with their skills, Kamal expanded their roles and now they are throughout in the movie right from the first scene till the climax. Trisha, has matured a lot as an actress. After Jessy of VTV, Ambu is yet another powerful character which Trisha has handled with Caution and Care. Now she can be really called as an "Actress" rather than the female who appear just to run behind the hero. Other actors such as Sangeetha, Urvashi,Ramesh Aravind etc too have scored big time. Sangeetha proved that she is good at comedy and has a good timing.

I am no way qualified enough to Judge Kamal's acting skills as the whole world know about it. But i must say, he once again proved to be the Real "Universal Hero". The only actor who can break your tear glands by just using his eyes while enacting an emotional scene is Kamal Haasan. Watch out for the couple of emotional scenes in the movie and i am sure, there would be a drop of tear in a corner of your eye, even if you dont want to agree to that.

The flashback sequence is good and the way K.S Ravikumar portrayed it in an all Reverse manner is appreciable. Songs by DSP need a special mention out here. "Neela Vaanam" song, sung by Kamal Haasan is highly addictive just like the "Yaar Yaar Sivam" from Anpe Sivam and this is already topping the chartbuster list. Action sequence is less (as the story doesnt need it) and thankfully no items songs are tweaked in. Cinematography is yet another beauty and the camera has beautifully captured the entire cruise ship and major parts of Venice.

Overall, this movie is yet another festival in this festive season and definitely not to be missed. Watch it if you want to have a real nice time and to have a hearty laugh. This movie is worth the money you spent. Manmadan Ambu can be considered as a laughter festival before Kamal Haasan's next upcoming historical thriller, "Maruthanayagam"

Kandahar - Review

കീര്‍ത്തിചക്രയ്കും കുരുക്ഷേത്രയ്കും ശേഷം കാണ്ഡഹാറിലൂടെ മേജര്‍ മഹാദേവന്‍ വീണ്ടും വരുന്നു എന്ന് കേട്ടത് മുതല്‍ മറ്റേതൊരു മലയാളിയെയും പോലെ ഞാനും ത്രില്ലടിച്ചു ഇരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. അന്നേ കരുതിയതാണ് പടം കണ്ടിട്ട് ഒരു റിവ്യു എഴുതണമെന്ന്. കഴിഞ്ഞ വെള്ളിയാഴ്ച റിലീസ് ആയ ഈ ചിത്രം കണ്ടു പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയപ്പോ എന്റെ മനസ്സില്‍ ഒന്നേ തോന്നിയോള്ളു "എന്റെ മേജര്‍ രവി, ഞങ്ങളോട് എന്തിനീ ക്രൂരത ചെയ്തു?"

ഇത് കണ്ടു ഞാന്‍ ഒരു മമ്മൂട്ടി ഫാന്‍ ആണെന്ന തെറ്റിധാരണ ഒന്നും വേണ്ട. ഞാന്‍ കട്ടയ്ക്ക് മോഹന്‍ലാല്‍ ഫാന്‍ തന്നെ. ലാലേട്ടന്റെ ഒരൊറ്റ പടം പോലും വിടാതെ കാണുകയും ചെയ്യും. പറ്റിയാല്‍ റിലിസിന്റെ അന്ന് തന്നെ. പക്ഷെ ഉള്ളത്, ഉള്ള പോലെ തന്നെ പറയണമല്ലോ. അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ ചത്ത്‌ മുകളില്‍ ചെല്ലുമ്പോ ദൈവം പോലും എന്നോട് പൊറുക്കില്ല. പടം തല്ലിപോളിയാണ്!!! ഇത് എന്റെ മാത്രം ഏകപക്ഷീയമായ അഭിപ്രായമല്ല. കണ്ടവരുടെ എല്ലാം അഭിപ്രായമാണ്. ഈ ഒരു ചിത്രം മേജര്‍ രവി ചെയ്യേണ്ടിയിരുന്നില്ല. പടം പ്രേക്ഷകന് അത്ര രസിക്കാതെ പോയതില്‍ പ്രധാനമായ രണ്ടു കാരണം നീട്ടി വലിച്ച കാമ്പില്ലാത്ത ഫസ്റ്റ് ഹാഫും ചരിത്രത്തെ പാടെ അട്ടിമറിച്ചു കൊണ്ടുള്ള സെക്കണ്ട് ഹാഫും ആണ്. പണ്ട് നടന്നിട്ടുള്ള സംഭവങ്ങള്‍ ഇതിനു മുന്‍പും ഒരുപാട് പേര്‍ സിനിമ ആക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. അപ്പോഴൊക്കെ ചരിത്രം വളചോടിചിട്ടുമുണ്ട്. അത് ഏറ്റവും അവസാനം കണ്ടു പഴശിരാജയിലായിരുന്നു . പക്ഷെ ആ സിനിമ ചിത്രീകരിച്ച മികവു കൊണ്ട് ചരിത്രം വളചോടിക്കപെട്ടിരിക്കുകയാനെന്നു പലരും തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞത് പോലുമില്ല. അവിടെയാണ് ഒരു സംവിധായകന്റെ ക്രാഫ്റ്റ് വെളിപ്പെടുന്നത്.പക്ഷെ കാണ്ഡഹാര്‍ എന്ന ഈ ചിത്രം കണ്ടിറങ്ങുന്ന ഒരു സാധാരണക്കാരന്റെ മനസ്സില്‍ ശൂന്യത മാത്രം അവശേഷിപ്പിക്കാനെ മേജര്‍ രവിക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുള്ളൂ. കഴിഞ്ഞ രണ്ടു മണിക്കൂര് നേരം ഞാന്‍ എന്താണ് കണ്ടു കൊണ്ടിരുന്നത് എന്ന് പ്രേക്ഷകന്‍ സ്വയം ചോദിക്കുന്ന തരത്തില്‍ ഉള്ള ശൂന്യത.

സിനിമ തുടങ്ങുന്നത് ഊട്ടിയിലാണ്. അവിടുത്തെ എല്ലാവരും ബഹുമാനിക്കുന്ന ഒരു അദ്ധ്യാപകന്‍ ആണ് ലോകനാധഷര്‍മ്മ (അമിതാഭ് ബച്ചന്‍) അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മകനാണ് പൈലറ്റ് ആയ സുര്യ. പൈലറ്റ് ആണെങ്കിലും സൂര്യക്കു ജോലി ഒന്നും കിട്ടിയിട്ടില്ല. തൊഴില്‍ രഹിതനായ വിദ്യ സമ്പന്നന്‍. (നല്ല കാശും നല്ല വിദ്യാഭ്യാസവും പൈലറ്റും ഒക്കെ ആയ സൂര്യക്കു ജോലി മാത്രമില്ല എന്ന് മേജര്‍ രവി പറയുമ്പോ പ്രേക്ഷകന്‍ ചോദിച്ചു പോകും "ഞങ്ങള്‍ എന്നാടാ കുവേ മണ്ടന്മാര്‍ ആണോ" എന്ന്. പക്ഷെ അവനെ തൊഴില്‍ രഹിതന്‍ ആയി വെചെക്കുന്നത് മോഹന്‍ലാലിന് വന്നു പട്ടാളത്തില്‍ കൊണ്ട് പോകാന്‍ ആണെന്ന് എനിക്കപ്പോഴേ മനസ്സിലായി. എന്റെ ഒരു കാര്യം) അങ്ങനെ നാട്ടില്‍ അടിപിടിയും തല്ലുമായ് കഴിയുന്ന സൂര്യയെ അത് വഴി ചുമ്മാ പോയ മേജര്‍ മഹാദേവന്‍ വന്നു പട്ടാളത്തില്‍ എടുക്കുന്നു (മനസ്സിലായില്ലേ? എടാ എല്‍ദോ, നിന്നെ സിനിമെലെടുതെന്നു!!! അങ്ങനെ ആര്‍കും ചുമ്മാ ഓടി കേറാന്‍ പറ്റുന്ന ഒന്നാണ് ഈ പട്ടാളം പട്ടാളം എന്ന് പറയുന്ന സംഭവം എന്ന് സത്യം പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ ഞാന്‍ അപ്പോഴാ അറിയുന്നത്)

ഇന്റര്‍വെല്‍ വരെ കാണിക്കുന്നത് സൂര്യയുദെ ട്രിയിനിങ്ങ് ആണ്. പുഷ് അപസ് എടുപ്പിക്കലും തവള ചാട്ടവും കണ്ടാല്‍ ഉറക്കം വരുന്ന തരത്തില് ഉള്ള കോമഡി സീനുകളും കൊണ്ട് വലിച്ചിഴച്ചു നീട്ടാവുന്നതിന്റെ പരമാവധി മേജര്‍ രവി ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. ക്യാമറ റീലിനു നാക്കുണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ അത് ചോദിച്ചേനെ ഇങ്ങനെ നീട്ടാന്‍ ഞാന്‍ എന്നാ റബ്ബര്‍ ബാന്ട് ആണോ എന്ന്. ഇന്റെര്‍വല്‍ ആകുമ്പോഴേക്കും തീവ്രവാദികള്‍ ഒരു തീരുമാനത്തില്‍ എത്തുന്നു. ഫ്ലൈറ്റ് അങ്ങ് റാഞ്ചിയെക്കാമെന്ന് .ഇനിയെങ്കിലും കഥ അടിപൊളി ആകുമെന്ന് കരുതി ചായ കുടിക്കാന്‍ പോയ ഞാന്‍ മണ്ടനായെന്നു പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ മതിയല്ലോ.

ഇന്റര്‍വെലിനു ശേഷം കഥ കമ്പ്ലീറ്റു മാറ്റി മറിചിരിക്കുകയാണ്. മുംബൈയില്‍ നിന്ന് ഡല്‍ഹിയിലേക്ക് പുറപ്പെടുന്ന എയര്‍ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ വിമാനം തീവ്രവാദികള്‍ റാന്‍ചുന്നു. വിമാനം പറന്നു അഞ്ചു മിനിട്ട് കഴിഞ്ഞു ഫ്യുവല്‍ നിറയ്ക്കാന്‍ ഡല്‍ഹിയില്‍ ഇറക്കുന്നു. റാഞ്ചിയ ഉടനെ കാട്ടില്‍ ഒരു ഓപ്പറേഷനില്‍ ആയിരുന്ന മേജര്‍ മഹാദേവന് വയര്‍ലെസ്സ് സന്ദേശം കിട്ടുന്നു. പിന്നെ കാണിക്കുന്നത് മേജര്‍ മഹാദേവനും സങ്ഖവും ദല്‍ഹി എയര്‍പ്പോര്‍ട്ടില്‍ ഫ്ലൈറ്റിന്റെ ചോട്ടില്‍ വെയ്റ്റ് ചെയ്യുന്നതാണ്. ഇതൊക്കെ കാണുമ്പോ എനിക്ക് തോന്നുന്നത് മേജര്‍ മഹാദേവന്റെ കയ്യിലെ വയര്‍ലെസ്സ് പോലെ മേജര്‍ രവി ബ്രെയിന്‍ലെസ്സ് ആണെന്നാ. അതോ പ്രേക്ഷകര്‍ ബ്രെയിന്‍ലെസ്സ് ആണെന്ന് രവി ചേട്ടന്‍ കരുതിയോ? പതിവ് പോലെ മേലധികാരികളെ ധിക്കരിച്ചു മേജര്‍ മഹാദേവന്‍ ഫ്ലൈട്ടിലെക് തന്റെ ഗടികലേം കൂട്ടി ഓപ്പറേഷന് തുടങ്ങുന്നു. വിമാനത്തിന്റെ വീല് വഴി കേറി ഗുഡ്സ് സ്റ്റൊരെജില്‍ എത്തുന്നു (ഗുരുവായുരപ്പാ ഇതെന്തൊരു പരീക്ഷണം. ഇങ്ങേരു രജനികാന്തിന് പഠിക്കുവാണോ) ഡല്‍ഹിയില്‍ നിന്ന് പൊങ്ങിയ ഫ്ലൈറ്റില്‍ പത്തു മിനിട്ട് കൊണ്ട് കമാണ്ടോസ് കേറി തീവ്രവാദികളെ മൊത്തം തട്ടുന്നു. ഇതോടെ കഥ തീര്‍ന്നു എന്ന് കരുതി ഇരിക്കുമ്പോഴല്ലേ ക്ലൈമാക്സ്. തീവ്രവാദികളുടെ വെടിയില്‍ ഒരെണ്ണം പൈലറ്റിനു കൊള്ളുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ വിമാനം നിയന്ത്രണം വിട്ടു പോകുകയാണ്. മേജര്‍ മഹാദേവനും ഗ്യാങ്ങും ഉള്ള വിമാനം അങ്ങനെ തകരാന്‍ പാടില്ലല്ലോ. യുധഭൂമിയില് നിന്ന ജീവനോടെ തിരിച്ചു നാട്ടിലെത്തിയ പട്ടാളകാരന് തലയില്‍ തേങ്ങാ വീണു ചാവാന്‍ പാടില്ലല്ലോ. അത് കൊണ്ട്... അത് കൊണ്ട് മാത്രം വിമാനത്തിന്റെ നിയന്ത്രണം ഏറ്റെടുക്കുകയാണ് മേജര്‍ മഹാദേവന്‍. കാറ്റ് പോകാറായ പൈലറ്റ് പറയുന്നത് കേട്ടു വിമാനം മേജര്‍ മഹാദേവന്‍ ഓടിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അറിയാതെ മോഹന്‍ലാല്‍ ഫാന്‍സ്‌ അസ്സോസ്സിയെഷന്കാരുടെ തൊണ്ടയില്‍ നിന്ന് പോലും വന്നു പോകും "കൂ" എന്ന ശബ്ദം.

പറയുമ്പോള്‍ എല്ലാം പറയണമല്ലോ. കെ പി എസ് സി ലളിതയും അമിതാഭും ഒക്കെ തങ്ങളുടെ ഭാഗം വളരെ മനോഹരമായി തന്നെ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. പുതുമുഖം സുര്യ അത്ര പോര. മസില്‍ ഉണ്ടെകിലും മുഖത്ത് ഒരു വികാരവും ഇല്ല. എന്തിനാനെണ്ണ്‍ അറിയില്ല രഹസ്യയുടെ ഒരു ഐട്ടം സോങ്ങും കുത്തി കയറ്റിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. മേജര്‍ രവിയും ഈ ചിത്രത്തില്‍ അഭിനയിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പട്ടാളത്തില്‍ ചേര്‍ന്ന സൂര്യയുദെ ട്രെയിനര്‍ ആയി. പല രംഗത്തും നായര്‍ സാബിലെ മമ്മൂട്ടിയെ അനുകരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നില്ലേ മേജര്‍ രവി എന്ന് തോന്നി പോകും. പിന്നെ, ട്രെയിനിങ്ങ് കഴിഞ്ഞു പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ സുര്യ ഉടനെ തന്നെ ക്യാപ്റ്റന്‍ ആയതും ഒരു ടീമിനെ ലീട് ചെയ്യുന്നതും എങ്ങനെ ആണെന്ന് എനിക്കറിഞ്ഞുട. ട്രെയിനിംഗ് കഴിഞ്ഞാല്‍ ഉടനെ ക്യാപ്റ്റന്‍ ആകുമെന്നരിഞ്ഞിരുന്നേല്‍ ഞാനും പട്ടാളത്തില്‍ ചെര്‍ന്നെനെ . ക്യാപ്റ്റന്‍ ശരത് മേനോന്‍ എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാലെന്താ പുളിക്കുവോ?

കീര്‍ത്തിചക്ര വളരെ നല്ലൊരു പടം ആയിരുന്നു. മിഷന്‍ 90 ടൈയസ് പൊട്ടി പോയെങ്കിലും സത്യം സത്യമായി തന്നെ കാണിച്ചിരുന്നു. കുരുക്ഷേത്ര അത്യാവശ്യം നന്നായി ഓടിയ ചിത്രമാണ്. നിര്‍മാതാവിന്റെ കൈ പൊള്ളിയില്ല. പക്ഷെ കാണ്ഡഹാര്‍ ഇത്തിരി കടന്ന കൈ ആയിപ്പോയി. മുന്പ് ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ നല്ല പേര് മേജര്‍ രവി കളഞ്ഞു കുളിച്ചു എന്ന വേണം കരുതാന്‍. സത്യത്തെ വളചോടിക്കുംപോള്‍ കുറഞ്ഞത്‌ അതില്‍ കാശ് മുടക്കി പടം കാണാന്‍ കയറുന്ന പ്രെക്ഷനെ രസിപ്പിക്കുന്ന തരത്തില്‍ ഉള്ള എന്തെങ്കിലും വേണം. 1994 ഇല്‍ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ എയര്‍ലൈന്‍സിന്റെ IC 814 എന്ന കാട്മണ്ടുവില്‍ നിന്ന ടല്‍ഹിയിലെക്കുള്ള വിമാനം റാഞ്ചിയപ്പോള്‍ നമ്മള്‍ കണ്ടത് 5 ദിവസം നീണ്ടു നിന്ന സംഭവബഹുലമായ തീവ്രവാദ നീക്കമാണ്. നാടകീയമായ സംഭവങ്ങള്‍ ആയിരുന്നു അന്ന് അരങ്ങേറിയത്. അമൃത്സാറില്‍ ഇന്ധനം നിറയ്ക്കാന്‍ വിമാനം ഇറക്കിയതും ഇന്ത്യന്‍ കമാണ്ടോസ് വെറും നോക്ക് കുത്തികള്‍ ആയതും, കാബുളില്‍ വിമാനം ഇറക്കാന്‍ സമ്മതിക്കാഞ്ഞതും, റന് വെ ആണെന്ന് കരുതി പൈലറ്റ് നാഷണല്‍ ഹൈവേയില്‍ വിമാനം ഇറക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചതും ദുബൈയില്‍ പകുതി ബന്ദികളെ മോചിപ്പിച്ചതും കാണ്ടഹാറില്‍ വിമാനം ഇറക്കിയതും തുടര്‍ന്നുണ്ടായ സംഭവ വികാസങ്ങളും വേണമെങ്കില്‍ വളരെ നല്ല രീതിയില്‍ മേജര്‍ രവിക്ക് ചിത്രികരിക്കാമായിരുന്നു. പട്ടാള ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ എടുക്കുന്നതില്‍ മേജര്‍ രവിക്ക് മറ്റാരെകാളും കഴിവും അനുഭവവും ഉണ്ട്. അത് കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ ഇനിയുള്ള ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ എടുക്കുംപോഴെങ്കിലും ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുക. മേജര്‍ രവിക്ക് മത്സരിക്കാനുള്ളത് മറ്റുള്ള സംവിധായകരോടല്ല, മറിച്ച് , മുന്പ് ചിത്രീകരിച് വിജയം കൊയ്ത സ്വന്തം ചിത്രങ്ങളോടാണ്‌

വളരെയേറെ പ്രതിക്ഷകലോടെയാണ് ഞാന്‍ "പോക്കിരി രാജ " കാണാന്‍ പോയത്. ഭാഗ്യത്തിന് എന്റെ പ്രതിക്ഷകള്‍ തെറ്റിയില്ല. വിചാരിച്ച പോലെ തന്നെ തല്ലിപ്പൊളി പടം. മമ്മുട്ടിയുടെ തുരുപ്പു ഗുലാന്‍, മായ ബസാര്‍, പരുന്ത്, തുടങ്ങിയ "സുപ്പര്‍ ഹിറ്റ് " ചിത്രങ്ങളുടെ നിരയിലേക്ക് മറ്റൊരെണ്ണം കുടി. ഇപ്പൊ ഈ പടത്തിന്റെ റിവ്യു എഴുതുന്നത് മറ്റൊന്നും കൊണ്ടല്ല, ഇത് വരെ ഈ പടം കാണാന്‍ സാധിക്കാഞ്ഞ ഭാഗ്യവാന്മാര്‍ക്ക് ഒരു മുന്നറിയിപ്പും, കഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട് ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന പണം വെറുതെ കളഞ്ഞ എന്നോടു തന്നെയുള്ള ദേഷ്യവും ആണ് കാരണം. മക്കളില്ലാത്ത എനിക്ക് ഇതൊക്കയല്ലേ ഒരാശ്വാസം. അപ്പൊ തുടങ്ങിയേക്കാം.

മലയാളി ഇതിനോടകം ഒരു നുറു പ്രാവശ്യമെങ്കിലും കേട്ട കഥ പിന്നെയും പൊക്കി കൊണ്ട് വന്നിരിക്കുകയാണ് ഉദയ്കൃഷ്ണയും സിബി കെ തോമസും. (എന്തിനു ചേട്ടാ ഞങ്ങളോട് ഈ ക്രുരത? ). ചെയ്യാത്ത കുറ്റത്തിന് ചെറുപ്പത്തിലെ ജയിലില്‍ പോകേണ്ടി വന്ന കഥാനായകനും , അച്ഛന്‍ ചെയ്ത കുറ്റം സ്വയം ഏറ്റെടുത്ത മകന്റെ കഥയുമൊക്കെ ഞാന്‍ സിനിമ കാണാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയ കാലം തൊട്ടേ മലയാളത്തില്‍ ഉള്ളതാണ്. പഴയ വിഞ്ഞു പുതിയ കുപ്പിയില്‍ കൊണ്ട് തന്നാല്‍ മലയാളി കണ്ണും പുട്ടി കുടികുമെന്നു കരുതിയോ? കഥ ഇങ്ങനെ. നെടുമുടി വേണുവിനു രണ്ടു മക്കള്‍. മമ്മുട്ടിയും പ്രിത്വിരാജും. നാട്ടിലെ ഉത്സവം നടത്താന്‍ വേണ്ടി രണ്ടു കുടുംബകാര്‍ തമ്മില്‍ മുടിഞ്ഞ കലിപ്പ്. (ദേവാസുരത്തിലും ഇതൊക്കെ തന്നെ അല്ലെ കണ്ടത്? ). വില്ലന്മാരുടെ വിട്ടിലെ ഒരു സന്തതിയെ നെടുമുടി വേണു അറിയാതെ കൊല്ലുന്നു. ആ കുറ്റം ഏറ്റെടുത് മമ്മുട്ടി ജയിലിലോട്ടു വണ്ടി കേറുന്നു.(ഏതാണ്ട് ഇത് പോലൊക്കെ തന്നെ ആയിരുന്നു രാജമാണിക്യത്തിലെ ഫ്ലാഷ്ബാകും) സത്യം അറിയാവുന്നത് ചത്ത ചെക്കനും, ഹിറോ മമ്മുസിനും, പ്രേക്ഷകര്‍ക്കും, പിന്നെ ക്ലൈമാക്സില്‍ ഈ സത്യം തുറന്നു പറയാന്‍ വേണ്ടി മാത്രം സിനിമയില്‍ ഉള്ള വിജയ രാഖവനും. ജയിലില്‍ നിന്ന് തിരിച്ചു വന്ന മമ്മുട്ടി വില്ലന്മാരുടെ കൈ കൊണ്ട് തിരാതിരിക്കാന്‍ നാട് വിടുന്നു. എങ്ങോട്ട്? മധുരയ്ക്ക്. എടുത്തു പറയേണ്ടത് ഈ പടത്തിലെ മമ്മുട്ടിയുടെ ടാന്‍സ് ആണ്. ജമ്പോ സര്‍ക്കസിലെ കരടി ചെയ്യും ഇതിലും നല്ല ടാന്‍സ്. പിന്നെ, ഒരു കാര്യമുണ്ട്. മമ്മുട്ടിക്ക്‌ വേണ്ടി പ്രത്യേകം രൂപകല്പന ചെയ്തതാണ് ടാന്‍സ് സ്റ്റെപ്സ് എല്ലാം. കയ്യടിക്കുക, ആകാശത്തേക്ക് വിരല്‍ ചുണ്ടുക. പിന്നേം കയ്യടിക്കുക. മമ്മുട്ടിയുടെ ചില മുവ്മെന്റ്സു കണ്ടപ്പോ കി കൊടുത്ത റോബോട്ട് ടാന്‍സ് കളിക്കുന്ന പോലെ തോന്നി. എന്തിനാ അങ്കിള്‍ വയസ്സ് കാലത്ത് ആവശ്യമില്ലാത്ത പണിക്കു പോകുന്നത്. നല്ല പ്രായത്തില്‍ കളിച്ചിട്ടില്ല ടാന്‍സ്, പിന്നാ ഇപ്പോഴ്.

അഞ്ചാറു തമിഴ് പദങ്ങളും കുറെ മലയാളം പടങ്ങളും മിക്സ് ചെയ്തു രണ്ടു സുപ്പര്‍ സ്ടാരുകളെയും വിളിച്ചു തമിഴ് നാടിന്നു ഒരു നായികയെയും ഇറക്കുമതി ചെയ്തു കുറച്ചു കോമഡിയും ചേര്‍ത്ത് ഇറക്കിയാലോന്നും സുപ്പര്‍ ഹിറ്റ് പടം ആകുല്ല. അതിനു നല്ലൊരു കഥ വേണം. സ്ക്രിപ്റ്റ് വേണം. അല്ല ചുമ്മാ കൊറെ വെടിം പോകേം മാത്രം മതിയെങ്കില്‍ പടം കാണാന്‍ ആളുണ്ടാവില്ല. ആളുകള്‍ക്ക് എപ്പൊഴും അബദ്ധം പറ്റില്ലല്ലോ. വൈശാഖിന്റെ ആദ്യത്തെ പടം ആണ് ഇത്. ഇനിയും ഇത് പോലുള്ള കടും കൈ കാട്ടി കുട്ടുന്നതിന് മുന്‍പ് ഒരു കാര്യം ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചാല്‍ നന്ന്. മലയാളിക്ക് ക്ഷമയും സഹന ശക്തിയും അനുദിനം കുറഞ്ഞു വരികയാണ്. സുക്ഷിച്ചാല്‍ ദുഖിക്കണ്ട. "നാന്കെ ഒരു തടവേ അടിച്ചാ അത് നുറു തടവേ അടിച്ച മാതിരി"

കാലാ കാലങ്ങളില്‍ മനുഷ്യനെ വെറുപ്പിക്കുന്ന സൃഷ്ടികള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിക്കൊന്ടെയിരിക്കും. അത് ദൈവ  നിശ്ചയമാണ്. അതിന്‍റെ ഏറ്റവും നല്ല   ഉദാഹരണമാണ് ഹരിശങ്കര്‍ എന്നാ എമ്ബോക്കിയുടെ  മുകളില്‍ കാണുന്ന തോന്ന്യാസം. കണ്ടക ശനി കൊണ്ടേ പോകു എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ പോലെയായി ഈ വീഡിയോ കണ്ട ആളുകളുടെ അവസ്ഥ. അടുത്ത കാലത്തൊന്നും ഇത്രേം കുതറയായ ഒരു സംഭവം ഞാന്‍ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല. കുറെ കാലങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മുന്പ് സാം ആന്ടെഴ്സന് എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞൊരു ജിവി മനുഷ്യനെ വെറുപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു. പിന്നെ അവന്‍റെ അഡ്രെസ്സ് ഇല്ലാതെയായി. നാട്ടുകാര്‍ തല്ലികൊന്നു കുഴിച്ചു മുടി എന്നാണു കേട്ടു കേള്‍വി.  അങ്ങനെ ഇരിക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് ഈ ഹരിശങ്കരിന്റെ വരവ്. എന്ത് ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചാണ് ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു ആല്‍ബം ഇവന്മാരൊക്കെ ഇറക്കിയത് എന്ന് എത്ര ആലോചിച്ചിട്ടും എനിക്ക് മനസ്സിലാകുന്നില്ല. ഇവര്‍ക്കൊക്കെ   സാമാന്യ ബുദ്ധി ഇല്ലാത്തതാണോ   അതോ ജന്മനാ മന്ദബുദ്ധികാലോ?

ബാക്കി ഉള്ളവരുടെ മുന്നില്‍ മലയാളികളുടെ മാനം കളയുന്നത് ഇത് പോലെയുള്ള അറുക്ക ടിംസാനു. അല്ലേലും നോര്‍ത്ത് ഇന്ദ്യന്സോക്കെ  മലയാളി എന്ന് കേട്ടാല്‍  "ഓ, ബ്ലഡി മല്ലുസ്" എന്ന ഒരു എക്സ്പ്രഷന്‍  ആണ്. അതിന്‍റെ മോളിലാണ് ഇത്. ഇതിനൊക്കെ വേണ്ടി കാശ് മുടക്കുന്നവന്മാരെ വേണം തല്ലാന്‍. അറിയാന്‍ പാടില്ലഞ്ഞിട്ടു ചോദിക്കുവ, ഇവന്റെ ഒക്കെ വിട്ടില്‍ ചോദിക്കാനും പറയാനും ആരുമില്ലേ. ആ നില ടി ഷര്‍ട്ടും ഇട്ടു തോപ്പിം വെച്ച് പാട്ട് പാടി അര്‍മാദിക്കുന്ന ചേട്ടനാണ് ഈ മഹാ പാതകത്തിന്റെ സൂത്രധാരന്. പാടിയതും, എഴുതിയതും, സംവിധാനിച്ച്ചതും, അഭിനയിച്ചതും ഒക്കെ ആ അണ്ണന്‍ തന്നെ. യെവനാരാ ബാലചന്ദ്ര മേനോനോ? കുടെ ഡാന്സ് കളിക്കുന്ന ചെക്കന്മാരെ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കു. കെട്ടിടം പണിക്കു ഒരിസ്സയിന്നു വരുന്ന ഹിന്ദിക്കാരന്മാര്‍കും   തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലെ കല്പണിക്കാര്‍ക്കും കാണും ഇവന്മാരെകാളും ഭംഗിയും അന്തസ്സും. ഒരുത്തന്‍റെ വിചാരം അവന്‍ പ്രഭുദേവക്ക് , മൈക്കിള്‍ ജാക്സണില്‍ ഉണ്ടായ മോന്‍ ആണെന്നാ. അവന്‍ ഒരുത്തന്റെ തുള്ളല്‍ തന്നെ അസഹനിയം. അപ്പോഴ ഒരുത്തനെ രണ്ടായി കാണിക്കുന്ന ഗ്രാഫിക്സ്. ശോ.. ഈ ഗ്രാഫിക്സ് കണ്ടാ ജെയിംസ്   കാമരുന്‍ വന്നു ക്യാമറാ മാനെ പൊക്കി കൊണ്ട് പോകും, അവതാര്‍ റിലോടടിന്റെ  ക്യാമറ മാന്‍ ആകാന്‍. പോയി ചാവിനെട...>

ഈ മഹത്തായ കൊലാ സൃഷ്ടിയുടെ അതി സമ്പുഷ്ടവും അനിര്‍വച്ചനിയവും അത്യന്തം ആഹ്ലാദ ജനകവുമായ മനുഷ്യ മനസ്സിന്റെ ആഴങ്ങളിലേക്ക് ഉളിയിട്ടിറങ്ങുന്ന അതി ഗ്രഹണിയമായ ഈണങ്ങളുടെ   മാസ്മരികത നമുക്ക് ശ്രദ്ധിക്കാം. മനസ്സിലാവുന്ന ഭാഷയില്‍ പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ ഹരിശങ്കര്‍ എന്ന ഡാഷ് മോന്‍  എഴുതി വെച്ച തോന്യാസം ശ്രദ്ധിക്കാമെന്ന്.

വെറുതെ എന്തെങ്കിലും ഒക്കെ എഴുതി വെച്ചു അതിനൊരു ട്യുനും കൊടുത്തു  പണിയില്ലാതെ തെണ്ടി തിരിഞ്ഞു നടക്കുന്ന ചെക്കന്മാര്ക് ഫുട്പാത്തില്‍ കിട്ടുന്ന ടി ഷര്‍ട്ടും ജിന്സും വാങ്ങി കൊടുത്തു ആളുകള്‍ വെളിക്കിരിക്കാന്‍ പോകുന്നത് പോലെയുള്ള ലൊക്കേഷനില്‍ ഒരു ഹാന്ടിക്യാമും വച്ചു തുള്ളിച്ച്ചാലോന്നും ആല്‍ബം ആകുല്ല ചേട്ടാ. വെറുതെ മാനം കെടത്തെയുല്ല് . ഈ വീഡിയോ യ്ക്ക്  യുട്യുബില്‍ കിട്ടിയ കമന്റ്സ് കണ്ടിട്ടെങ്കിലും അത് മനസ്സിലാക്കണം. സംഗിതം ഒരു മഹാ സാഗരമാണ്. അതിന്‍റെ മുന്നില്‍ പകച്ചു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ഒരു കുട്ടി ആകുന്നതിനു മുന്നേ സമ്മര്‍ സോല്ട്ടടിക്കാന്‍ പോയാലെ, വല്ല കൊമ്പന്‍ സ്രാവും വന്നു കൊണ്ടു പോകും. ഇനി എങ്കിലും ഇത്തരം കടും കൈ കാണിക്കുന്നതിന് മുന്പ് ഒരു നിമിഷം ആലോചിക്കണം. കേരളത്തിലെ പാവം ജനങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ചു....

Pazhassiraja - A True Review

t was my monthly bike trip to Sulthan Bethery from Mysore and this time my journey was to meet the King, Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja. I had high expectations for this movie as the trio MT-Hariharan-Mammooty had created magic in the past with "Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha". My expectations were not completly let down and the 7 hours ride for a 3.15 hour movie was not at all a waste.

As Usual, MT has twisted the history in this movie too. MT is known for bending the facts and we love it when he bend the history according to his will and we usually tend to believe what MT Vasudevan Nair told is the truth and not what history says. In Vadakkan Veeragadha, he portrayed Payyampalli Chanthu as a hero who is accused for the crime which he has not done. Viewers sympathized along with Chanthu and even now for any malayalee, If you ask whether chanthu was noble, they would say "Yes". That's the power of MT's pen. Infact Payyampalli Chanthu was a cheat and its he who killed Aromal. The Generous Chanthu was MT's creation and we believe that is history. Similarly, MT again changed history through "RavanaSeetha" where he said, Seetha was Ravana's daughter and he kidnapped Seetha due to fatherly affection.

Likewise, in Pazhassi Raja movie too, MT had made lot of changes and iam sure the new generation would believe what they see on screen. To Start with, History says, Pazhassi Raja was a short and dark man. He was bit fat and was loved by many for his bravery. Here Mammooty is not Short and dark but we cannot imagine anyone except him to portray Pazhassiraja. So this can be ignored. MT Says, Kaitheri Maakam had an abortion and later no where its mentioned that she became pregnant later. With the song "Kunnathe konnakum" I dont really know where hariharan meant to say maakam was concieved again. But in reality she had a daughter. Later Kaitheri Maakam had committed suicide by hanging herself on a mango tree. 2 days back there was an article in Mathrubhumi about Kaitheri Mathu, grand grand daughter of Kaitheri maakam where she showed the personal belongings of maakam. According to it, Pazhassi Raja was not killed by British but he too had committed suicide by swallowing a diamond ring. But MT gave the character a heroic touch at the climax and thats what we wanted to see. There are lot of instances in the movie where MT deliberatly twisted the truth and has written his own epic. But whatever it is, we always love to read what he writes and always gets astonished by his innovative thinking.





Lets take a charcter by character analysis. We will start of with

Sarath Kumar as Edachena Kunkan
Sarath Kumar has rocked big time in this movie. He has done a brilliant job as the army chief of pazhassi.Tamil industry has not yet exploited this man's talent and its for the first time Sarath Kumar got a chance to reveal his "Acting" skills. He looks stunning, masculine and truly suiting the role as the Army chief. No other actor could have portrayed Edachena Kunkan better than him.

Right from his intro scene, till the end, Sarath's screen presence gives you thrills. The scene just before the interval was mindblowing. Edachena Kunkan Reaches Pazhaveedan's(Suman)house to tell that the bond between British and Pazhassi Keralavarma stands cancelled. Then he delivers a dialogue to pazhaveedan,

" One day we would see face to face. That days is not so far" and kicks the chair nearby.

It really gave me goosebumps and i wanted to see the scenen agian and again. Another thing to be mentioned, a man of late 50's has still maintained his body well.Remember Sarath Kumar was the only actor back in 90's who had a well maintained physique in Tamil industry. During the fight scene with pazhaveedan, he delivers a dialogue with a raised dagger. Just check out his biceps and the flames that sparkle in his eyes.
When he says,

"Ithu thalaykal chanthuvinte maladaivangalk Edachena kunkante Kuruthi" (This is Edachena Kunkan's offering to the God's for Thalaykal Chanthu)

That was one hell out of a scene and the entire theatre was filled with claps. His dialogue deliver is awesome and you can see the pain, Revenge, Hatred, everything in his eyes.Altogether, Sarath Kumar has done an excellent job as Edachena Kunkan

Manoj K Jayan as Thalaykal Chanthu

Another Plus point. There are 3 actors who are my all time favourites.Who can do any role with ease. Be it comedy, Character role or villain role, those 3 people would "Live" as the character within whack of a second. They are Manoj K Jayan, Siddique and Rajan P Dev. Thalaykal Chanthu is one of the powerful character of Manoj in the recent past, after the Digambaran in Ananthabhadram (Watch it, if you havent). When Manoj is on screen, viewers feel relaxed. Audience would have a confidence that Thalaykal chanthu would take care of British troops and nothing to worry. His expressions, Body language, Dialogues everything were perfect to be the tribal chief. His final scene in the movie is one of the beautifully portrayed shots. The Way manoj usues Bow and Arrow, also during the fight before getting caught, was truly amazing. Three cheers to Manoj K Jayan for living above expectations

Padmapriya as Neeli

Padmapriya as Neeli, Thalaykal Chanthu's lover is a powerful character. Padmapriya has not done anything kind of this role before in her career. She has played her part well and the hardwork and effort taken was seen on screen. She along with Thalaykal chanthu lead the tribal troop for guerilla war against the british. They fought the british behind the cover of woods and dense forest. Neeli's fight sequences are worth a mention and a thumbs up for her

Suresh Krishna as Kaitheri Ambu

Now this was one miscast in the movie. I really dont know why Hariharan casted this dummy piece, Suresh Krishna. I believe if Siddique was casted instead of Suresh, the character would have been much powerful and would have gained a lot of cheer from the audience. Eventhough Ambu has a huge importance in the story the weak casting made it go un noticed. But Suresh has done whatever was told to him. So we can give a grade of "Met expectations" and nothing more. As usual, there was no power to his dialogues and sucked big time during the emotional dialogue delivery towards the climax. Thos who have already seen this movie, just imagine the role with Siddique, instead of Suresh and you could feel what a great miss it was from Hariharan

Kanika as Kaitheri Maakam

She looked quite good as Maakam, eventhough there were nothing much to offer from her side. One scene where Kanika outstanded is where she helps Pazhassi to escape from the British troops. Kanika was apt for the role and did a decent work

Last but not least, Mammooty as Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja

Mammooty looks stunning here both in the first half and in the second half. During the second half, with the beard and all, he looked exactly same like Chanthu and we feel, Time has not affected this man. The scene were he go alone to the British regiment to take revenge, is beautifully shot and i just jumped out of the chair clapping when he shoot the british man from the horse.

However, I feel Mammooty's talent for stunt scenes were not properly exploited. There were just 3 fight scenes for mammoty through out the movie, where as Manoj K jayan and SArath Kumar has more than 6 fight sequences. Most of the time he was shown just as a one who sit back in the gallery and enjoy the match. His Army and his mighty warriors fight the british through out the movie to save their king, to protect him and the King was no where to be seen when his mighty warriors needed his help.
His dialogue delivery is at its best and there is one scene which would generate a small drop of tear on the corner of your eye.

When Pazhassi sets out to fight the british alone at the climax, his nephew cries for him. Then Pazhassi would say,

"Dont cry for me. Shed your tears for this unfortunate country!!!"

That was one of the best emotional scenes in the movie and MT's powerpacked script does make us ponder for a while. Altogether, Mammooty has a huge comeback after the 6 consecutive flops and he can be relaxed. He looks elogent in the King's Attire and motivates not only his army but also the Audience with the powerful dialogue delivery.

Now the Minus points are,

Like Anil mentioned, String works were totally poor and doesnt even worth a mention. People were flying as if they were the ancestors of spiderman and superman. String Work - Total Disaster

Pazhassi Raja's Intro scene. They had been moulding the scene well for his intro but spoiled at the end. I agree, Mammooty was not hyped, but when the movie is about Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, atleast a background score during his entry would have been better. Pazhassi Raja's intro was just like any other no name character in the movie.

Jagadeesh was absolutely Un necessary.

Less fight sequence for Pazhassi Raja

There are few mistakes or negatives here and there but while taking the movie as a whole, it can be accommodated. Jagathy Sreekumar, Thilakan and the Foreign actors have done their job more than expected. Cinematography was at its best and deserve an applause. Ramachandra babu has again proved himself. There are plenty of scenes where you would sit with your mouth wide open by seeing the beauty of the shot. Many shots just appeared like a beautifully written poem.

Altogether, This movie is worth a watch and Gokulam Gopalan can relax. This would transform into a super hit for 2 reasons.

1)A historical movie after a decade
2)The combination of MT - Hariharan - Mammooty

I had been to bangalore for the weekend and saw this Ever hyped picture. Avatar is named as the "Movie of the millennium" and the top ranker in imdb list. Even the critics are all praise to this movie. Each one is praising cameroon to the sky. But would you kill me if i say AVATAR is the hollywood version of an old Malayalam Movie?

Yes. Avatar is the hollywood version of an old malayalam movie. A Mohanlal starrer, Siddique-Lal directed, movie called VIETNAM COLONY!!!

Now wipe out the "What the Fa" expression from your face and lend me your ears.
